Green hydrogen pipelines

Green hydrogen pipelines: a sustainable energy solution

Green hydrogen pipelines are vital for a cleaner, sustainable energy future, ensuring emissions are reduced while adhering to strict safety and production standards.

Powering your zero emission vessels

As the world shifts towards more sustainable and eco-friendly energy sources, hydrogen is emerging as a key player in the clean energy landscape. Green hydrogen is produced by electrolysis of water using electricity generated by solar panels and wind turbines. This eco-friendly approach allows us to harness the energy from the sun and wind to create a versatile energy carrier.

Fuel cells are a crucial technology for the efficient conversion of hydrogen into electricity, allowing vessels to run emission free. Hydrogen pipelines play a crucial role in enabling a zero emission revolution. We at Piping have designed a double walled pipe that can ensure safe use of hydrogen.

Double-walled hydrogen pipeline

While hydrogen is an environmentally friendly and versatile energy carrier, it also has some safety issues. It is non-toxic, odourless and highly flammable. To ensure the safe transport of hydrogen through confined spaces, pipelines are designed double-walled for safety. This design minimises the risk of leaks and increases overall safety.

Safety and quality control

High demands are placed on the production process of hydrogen pipelines. We manufacture safe and high-quality double-walled pipelines. All welds are examined radiographically and then leak tests are carried out. These strict quality control measures are essential to ensure the integrity of the pipeline system.

To detect even the smallest leaks, a specialised leak test is performed using a gas mixture consisting of 95% nitrogen and 5% hydrogen. Hydrogen molecules are much smaller than air molecules, making them more likely to escape from a leak. The 95% nitrogen ensures that the gas mixture remains incombustible. A gas detector, often called a "sniffer", is used to give an audible signal when hydrogen molecules escape.

A zero emission future

One of the main advantages of using hydrogen as a clean energy source is its minimal impact on the environment. The combustion of hydrogen gas results in no CO2 emissions. In fact, the only by-product of this combustion is 100% pure water. This makes hydrogen a true zero emission fuel that can play a vital role in reducing the carbon footprint of our energy systems.
